Going Green With Your Kitchen Remodel

Many of our clients here at CJB Group Kitchens really care about the environment. As they plan their kitchen project, they want to make choices that have a minimal impact on the Earth. One of the ways that we can satisfy that desire is by offering 6 different lines of cabinets that are a part of the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program.

The KCMA is the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturer’s Association. They have a variety of programs, including a testing and performance program, opportunities to meet and network with people in the industry, and more. Their Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) was launched in 2006. Its goal is to help both consumers and manufacturers to reduce the impact that cabinets have on the environment. It is the only “green” program that focuses specifically on kitchen and bath cabinetry.

An ESP seal is awarded based on five different criteria. Companies are given points based on how they perform in each area. The KCMA looks at:

  • Air Quality
  • Product Resource Management
  • Process Resource Management
  • Environmental Stewardship
  • Community Relations

To get and maintain an ESP seal, companies have to review and continually upgrade their practices. Cabinets with the seal that are made from wood products are tested and shown to emit much lower levels of formaldehyde than more conventional materials. The program awards points towards certification for manufacturers who use materials that come from sustainable forestry programs. They also earn points for efforts to educate suppliers and involve their community in green projects.

In addition, the KCMA recently added the EPA SmartWay Freight Transport Sustainability Program to its ranking system. Companies can now earn points for using the EPAs registered partners to ship their products, helping to reduce your cabinets’ carbon footprint. Shipping partners in the program use fuel-efficient vehicles and have lower emissions than standard shipping methods.

At CJB Group Kitchens, the environment is important to us too. In fact, 6 out of the 8 cabinet lines that we offer to our clients are a part of the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program. These include
